I chose Machiya Kamiumeya in Gion because of its proximity to Nishiki Market, which I was excited to explore. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the express check-in and check-out and free WiFi throughout the property. The convenience of these features made my stay even more enjoyable.
Room 101 was small, and the noise from the nearby beds and washing machine made it difficult to have a peaceful stay. the hotel's location was not ideal for exploring Kyoto as the closest metro station and convenience store were a 10-15 minute walk away.

Comfortable rooms, I had fantastic experience.
We thoroughly enjoyed rooms with all required amenities. Location: the hotel was close enough to where restaurants of all types dotted along the river banks, and bus stops, Lawson convenience store and the historic area of Gion.

Traditional room with modern bathroom. Hot water needs to be turned on to work. Friendly and helpful staff who speak English well. Immaculately clean and neat. Conveniently located near restaurants and historical sites.

We loved the traditional Machiya style of the accommodation, with modern amenities and beautiful views of Japanese gardens in each room. As vegetarians and vegans, we appreciated the high-tech facilities that allowed us to prepare our own coffee and the helpful staff who offered local restaurant recommendations.
Felt lucky, no complaints whatsoever.

The Machiya Kamiumeya is my go-to place in Kyoto. The staff helped me plan my evenings during my first stay. With Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, an electric kettle, and a no-pets, no-smoking policy, it suits me perfectly. Can't wait to go back for Christmas!

I had a fantastic stay at this luxurious 4-star hotel. The location was perfect for me, situated in a quiet residential area. I enjoyed being away from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet still within walking distance to all the main attractions. The staff were incredibly kind and accommodating, always ready to help with any request. The room amenities were top-notch, from the ironing facilities to the comfortable sitting area. I especially appreciated the in-room safe and tea and coffee facilities. The room itself was beautifully designed and had everything I needed for a comfortable stay, including a flat-screen TV, carpeted floor, and a cozy bed.
I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a luxurious and comfortable stay. The staff are friendly, the location is quiet and residential, and the room amenities are superb.

Sky-high ceilings reminiscent of a traditional hibukuro chimney provided a breathtaking atmosphere throughout my stay. Each room showcased striking Japanese artwork, transporting me to another world. The view from Kiyomizu Temple was like a mesmerizing painting that captured the entire city.
Phone on-site not always attended to.

I chose this hotel for attending a colloquium and it provided all the necessary amenities for my work. The room was spacious and modern, with great Wi-Fi and a comfortable work desk. The staff were friendly and helpful, ensuring a smooth and productive stay.
I found it difficult to reach the staff via phone when needed. Having a more efficient communication system would have been beneficial for my work-related inquiries.

The hotel is located close to popular tourist spots, making it convenient to explore the area. The garden rooms are beautifully decorated with comfortable beds and clean bathrooms. The staff is friendly and helpful, providing guests with helpful recommendations and a warm welcome. The amenities are luxurious, with little welcome notes and a mini bar.
One downside is navigating the narrow and steep staircase, especially if carrying heavy luggage.

The Garden View room at The Machiya Kamiumeya is absolutely luxurious and comfortable. The double bed provided me with the best night of sleep I've had in ages. The room is air-conditioned and has all the amenities I needed, like a wardrobe, kettle, fridge, safety deposit box, and a flat-screen TV. The private bathroom with a bidet was a nice touch.
Honestly, I can't think of anything that I didn't like about the room. But hey, we all have different preferences, right?

We were blown away by our stay at this hotel. The garden room we chose was like something out of a movie, with its beautiful design and cozy atmosphere. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and we ended up oversleeping because we couldn't resist its allure. The staff at the reception were exceptional, leaving us sweet notes and Sake to celebrate our honeymoon. They were also incredibly helpful, providing us with recommendations and directions to nearby attractions. We didn't want to leave their kind and welcoming presence. The hotel is located in a quiet area, but still within walking distance to the center of town. Thank you for making our stay here so unforgettable!

The hotel had a decent size room with a comfortable bed and clean bathroom. The staff was friendly and accommodating. the hotel's breakfast was delicious and had a wide variety of options. The hotel was located close to shopping and dining areas, making it convenient for us to explore the city.
The hotel's atmosphere was not suitable for bringing a romantic feeling to our stay. We had high expectations of the hotel being sufficiently romantic for our getaway, but it didn't match up to those expectations.
